Welcome Great Pumpkin, A Make-Along!

The season is turning, the temperature changing. The air is tainted slightly with smell of smoke and earth. Corn and berries abound, and fog slinks in with the night.

Welcome Great Pumpkin!

Halloween is coming up, which means that it’s still cool enough in my part of the world to be knitting larger-ish items, and it’s cooling off everywhere else. Autumn is my favourite time of year, and I truly miss the changing of the colours and the smell of spiced cider in the air. This year, even though I won’t be in a location to join in the proper worshipping of the Great Pumpkin with the requisite Corn Maze runs and bonfires, I thought I’d host a Make-Along to soothe my feelings of homesickness.

The Great Pumpkin Make-Along goes for the length of October in which fellow Fibre Fiends will make something in honour of the coming of the Great Pumpkin on the 31st. Make use of all that spooky movie time and work up that grimm project you’ve been hiding in the closet!

Additionally, each week there will be a chosen Stitch & Bitch Flick that I’ll be watching and tweeting/instagramming about while I stitch. Join me for all, some, or none. My plan is to wind my way through a variety of Halloween themed movies and tv shows from my past. (I’m not a fan of torture-porn style horror movies, and I’ve got a tween, so most flicks will be Youngling appropriate.)

Come join me for a spooktastic Make-Along in preparation for the rise of the Great Pumpkin!

The Rules

  1. All Items MUST be cast-on on ON or AFTER 1 October 2018 (no WIPs please!)
  2. All items entered into the FO thread must have AT LEAST ONE of the following:
- Halloween themed pattern
- Halloween themed yarn (hand-dyed and hand-spun experiments do count)
- Halloween related story (i.e. you may choose to knit something inspired by an urban legend, a horror film, a scary tv show, spooky song, etc. If you choose this you must include either an explanation of how this FO relates to the theme, or a link to the movie/show/

How to Enter

  1. Make something that you can relate back to Halloween.
  2. Post a photo of the COMPLETED item in the FO thread on the SnarCraft Ravelry Group (what, you aren’t a member yet? Come join us!) and tell us why you chose this project for the MAL.

--------- You may enter more than one item, and you may enter your item EACH TIME you include one of the above. This means each entry has the potential of being counted three different times!
(i.e. The Grey Lady’s Cloak in Voolenvine’s Weep colourway, this FO would be worth 2 entries).

The FO thread will be opened 1 October 2018 at 10am GMT+11 (Sydney/Melbourne time) and  locked on 1 November 2018 at 10am GMT+11. I will draw a winner at that time and the Great Pumpkin will reward your efforts with something squee-worthy!

*****If you really want to impress the Great Pumpkin, then you may have an additional entry if your project matches with the Stitch n Bitch Flick of the week! (That makes for a total of FOUR potential entries for a project!)

For a bit of inspiration, in case you’re having trouble getting into the Great Pumpkin festivities…

Wins and Super(wash) Fails, Plastic Free July edition

Well that was embarrassing!  I woke up this morning and checked up on the blog. (Don’t judge me, everyone with a blog/podcast/publication of any sort does this, just ask Neil Gaiman.) Turns out at some point when I was uploading yesterday’s post I managed to tell Blogger to take EVERYTHING down from last month, save for my introduction...Doh! I’ve managed to fix it, and luckily without having to rewrite anything or muck up the blog stats. ( I confess stats aren’t as fun as writing the blog, but I do love seeing where people visiting are from - hey Peru!) If you were here for yesterday’s post go check out the archives, they are entertaining and right now there are only about 10 posts to catch up on! In other news, yesterday evening was a pretty nice time. Youngling managed to demonstrate much responsible-ness by phoning me at two different times, before I got to the point of panicking, that she was needing extra time to finish a school project with her group. The secon...

The Knitter vs Monday

Sometime last year Liebling and I were jokingly tossing around ideas for what one would need to make an epic fantasy story with yarn and knitting as a central feature of that world. It was one hell of an awesome several of hours of world building, let me tell you. Out of that evening, along with an even stronger desire to knit my geekboy all the amazing geeky things I can get my hands on, I got some major inspiration to try writing some short stories about yarn and fibre in a more fictional setting. I mean, what if you could have something like The Dresden Files, but with YARN? I think that sounds pretty damn cool and I'd buy it. I dabbled and dabbled and knitted and dabbled and eventually came up with a collection of stories about The Knitter. Here is one of these short stories. This is my first try at fictional writing since...erm...high school, so please bear that in mind when you read it. Also, if you like it, let me know and I'll share more. ;-) The Knitter vs Mon...

Here, hold my beer...for the sake of fibre

I hate spiders Last night I woke up with a start. I thought at first it was because I had fallen asleep with an audiobook running and it had come to a, rather loud, theatrical skirmish. I blearily turned off the book and rolled over onto my back, only to stare straight up at a gigantic huntsman above my head. Let me take a moment to remind you lovely readers that I live in Australia, and in Australia spiders range from microscopic to the size of your face. I'm aware that generally the poison level is inversely proportional to the size of the spider, but that doesn't stop me finding a spider big enough to smother me in my sleep terrifying. Also, I did not grow up here, so I inherently have a -5 resistance to local spiders. Since moving to Australia, I've tried to sort things with the spiders myself. I have tried to reason with them; applying to their sympathies by pointing out that I, too, spin and therefore we should be able to live amicably in respectful cohabitation...
