Dear Yarn Stash - I’m sorry. You were right.

Dear Yarn Stash - I’m sorry. You were right.

I should have listened. I should have not let the shiny new Stash acquisitions grab so much of my time and attention. I should have recognised it for what it was - a fling, a dalliance, a distraction.

More pointedly, I should have anticipated that the new acquisitions would not feel as loyal to me as you would when embarking on a collaborative project; our relationship being so new and green and all... I guess I was asking too much of that lovely vampish purple gradient when I decided it should be a lacework shawl...and perhaps I was coming on too strong for the autumnal sock gradient, because I can’t find the remaining yarn to start the second sock...

As a sign of my willingness to make amends, I went through my Ravelry Queue looking for my next cast-ons with only you in mind. Here’s what I’ve found. Do let me know your thoughts, won’t you?

I know you didn’t know me back when I was living in Seattle, but Pumpkin Spice was one of my favourite things about the start of Autumn. I plan to use the two balls of Knit Picks Palette in Brindle and Camel. This project would be a blending of the old and the new.

Also, you know how I love watching Eli’s podcast. It’s something we could do together, which would guarantee at least an hour a week of ‘us’ time.

Remember that beautiful charcoal linen yarn that has the coveted place in the chest of drawers? Wouldn’t it be splendid knit up in this pattern? I don’t have many summer appropriate projects yet. We could do a little planning for the future and start working on this for when the warmer weather comes.

Since lightweight linen yarn likes to compress down, this would be something that could travel in my bag. That way I would have a piece of you with me always.

I also have a garment’s worth of  that same linen yarn in a deep red that I have been hoping to spend some of my summer knitting time on with you. It's perfect for a late summer top, and has the peekaboo panel across the back.

It could be our little sexy secret, that peekaboo panel. ;-)

Surely, between this project and the one above it, we will find ourselves spending a great deal of time together in the coming summer months.

I do hope we can put this little spat behind us and focus on the glorious fibre adventures in our near future. If you're aimiable to these plans, let me know and I'll pop down to the stationary store and get things printed out. Then, this weekend, we can start pulling things together.

Yes, I will certainly send the newbie yarns from Melbourne to you for help in learning the, erm, ropes.

Thinking of you,

Viking

Here, hold my beer...for the sake of fibre

I hate spiders Last night I woke up with a start. I thought at first it was because I had fallen asleep with an audiobook running and it had come to a, rather loud, theatrical skirmish. I blearily turned off the book and rolled over onto my back, only to stare straight up at a gigantic huntsman above my head. Let me take a moment to remind you lovely readers that I live in Australia, and in Australia spiders range from microscopic to the size of your face. I'm aware that generally the poison level is inversely proportional to the size of the spider, but that doesn't stop me finding a spider big enough to smother me in my sleep terrifying. Also, I did not grow up here, so I inherently have a -5 resistance to local spiders. Since moving to Australia, I've tried to sort things with the spiders myself. I have tried to reason with them; applying to their sympathies by pointing out that I, too, spin and therefore we should be able to live amicably in respectful cohabitation...

First the Tea Bags, then the yarn...Is nothing sacred anymore?

Happy Plastic Free July fellow geeks and crafters!  I hope your week has started off well - hopefully those of you roasting have found a cool bevvie, and those of you lucky enough to feel a bit of proper cold (no Sydney, you do not count) I hope you have been able to curl up with a hot bevvie and your craft of choice. (Everyone please applaud the amazing Lisa in finishing her first ever lace project! May your ears be ever warm and toasty.) So, the weekend saw the start of Plastic Free July, an international movement coordinated by the Plastic Free July Foundation  to bring awareness about the damages plastic, and particularly single-use plastics, are having on our world and to challenge everyone to make changes - however small they may seem - to address the plastic crisis. This year the focus is on Refusing plastics in day to day behaviours. For those who follow me on twitter  (what, you don't? you're missing out! We are having a fibery blast over there) ...

Plastic Free Socks....it isn't a thing anymore :-/

Wow you guys!  Thank you so much for checking out yesterday’s post - there were some great comments, both here and on facebook/twitter about plastics in crafting and biodegradability of certain fibres, etc. It was a blast to research and I really enjoyed engaging with everyone on that topic. This is why I decided to blog - well this and the fact that I apparently have a knack for making Fibre Fiends bust a stitch laughing sometimes and my yarny friends asked that I please direct my energies wider to help minimise the destruction. ;-) Also, hello to the reader(s) in the Phillipines, I’m so glad our mutual love of fibre (or perhaps mutual disdain for plastic?) brought us together yesterday! And a shoutout to my American readers, what are you knitting/spinning/crocheting for your July 4th holiday? A quickie regarding my Plastic Free July posts. The aim is to make sure people are aware of where the plastic is creeping in, not to shame anyone into a cave of embarrassment or...
